Durham Sustain Ability (DSA) began work four years ago with the City of Pickering on the Sustainable Pickering initiative, the program continues to grow and evolve. Based on the success with Pickering DSA hopes to continue this work with other municipalities in Durham Region.
North Durham
Uxbridge, Brock and Scugog Townships are committed to moving towards a sustainable, integrated community in north Durham Region and have teamed up for a unique collaboration to develop an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) that includes both common and unique areas of focus for each municipality.
An ICSP is a “long-term plan, developed in consultation with community members, that provides direction for the community to realize sustainability objectives it has for the environmental, cultural, social and economic dimensions of its identity” (Infrastructure Canada, 2007).
The collaboration includes the three townships as equal contributing partners and the Regional Municipality of Durham. The Township of Uxbridge also provides administrative leadership, including working with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the key funder of the project.

Sustainable Pickering
Durham Sustain Ability is working with the City of Pickering on the Sustainable Pickering initiative. This project includes a greenhouse gas reduction program (Partners for Climate Protection) and sustainable neighbourhood plan, as well as a benchmarking initiative to measure Pickering’s progress on the journey toward sustainability.
The City of Pickering is the first municipality in the Province of Ontario to establish an Office of Sustainability.
The Office of Sustainability, together with the Sustainable Pickering Advisory Committee, is working to make Pickering a more sustainable city – environmentally, socially and economically − in partnership with like-minded residents, community groups and businesses.
